USF Stampede of Service (SOS) 2019

For this volunteer experience, we (USF students) assisted in beautification support at VISTA Gardens located in Carrollwood. Our beautification efforts consisted of helping to paint a mural along the side wall of the greenhouse onsite as well as organizing, replanting, and rearranging the areas surrounding the greenhouse.
Before volunteering we were educated on how VISTA Gardens operates and their history in addition to being given a tour of the grounds.
In my reflections, I note that the individuals that run VISTA Gardens are very passionate and helpful. I enjoyed being able to ask Roberta question after question as we continually worked to support their beautification efforts. I am not very good at gardening, or any kind of horticulture really, so it was a very valuable experience for me to be there. I was able to share the experience with my cousin who is considered the 'green thumb' of our generation because if he were a USF student, he would have loved being there.
It was rewarding to know that not only was I able to gain valuable knowledge about sustainability efforts, but also to offer a supportive hand to the dedicated men and women out there continuously to tend to the community garden we were at. It is a wonderful (and valuable) thing happening at VISTA Gardens, and I was happy to be a part of it. More so, it was nice to surprisingly serve with Bulls that I've served with before as well as meet new people.
In terms of feedback, I wish I would have (and could have) been more involved with the meet and greet and full festivities for our day of service. In my haste to the start of the semester, I registered late, got my dates crisscrossed and missed out on the kickoff festivities. All in all though, it was a positive experience with some very kind people on site that helped us get our hands dirty in a meaningful way.
